Rhythm Circles

Rhythm Circles are all about light hearted fun and connection. They are great for public events because community members can easily join in the rhythm. Community members will experience the fun and exhilaration of playing a drum,  percussion instrument or using their own body to join in the rhythm.

What will we experience in a Community Rhythm Circle?

Participants will experience the fun and exhilaration of playing a drum,  percussion instrument or using their own body to join in the rhythm.

 

Who can join a Rhythm Circle? 

Any age and skill level is welcome.

 

How long does a Rhythm Circle go for?

You can join and leave the rhythm circle at any time.

Rhythm circles often run for 30, 60 or 90 minutes.

 

How many can be in the Rhythm Circle?

About 10 to 50 people.  We have 45 drums + a mix of percussive instruments. We can incorporate clapping, stomping and body percussion into the rhythm.

 

What are the venue requirements for a Rhythm Circle?

Protected from sun, rain, strong wind.

Large enough for the participants to sit or stand in circles (need room between chairs for arm movement). 

Hard floor preferrable but can be on grass.

A place where people are already gathering or walking past.

Ability to make loud noise without disturbing others.

Drumming Playshops

Experience the fun and exhilaration of playing in an ensemble rhythm. Participants will learn the basic djembe drumming techniques and join us in the rhythm.

What will we experience and learn in a Drumming Playshop?

Playshop participants will learn:

• Basic djembe drumming techniques 

• How to play practice rhythms

• Parts from an ensemble rhythm

• How to come in and out of the rhythm from a drum call

How to join in an ensemble rhythm

Experienced drummers will have the opportunity to practice their technique and add extra parts to the ensemble.

 

Who can join a Drumming Playshop?

Drumming Playshops are most suitable for participants who:

• Are over 12 years of age (approximately)

• Are able to arrive at the dedicated start time and stay for the entire session 

• Have the ability to retain focus and not create distractions.

• Know how to cooperate in a group and consider the needs of others.

• Have the physical capacity to sit and reach the drum head and move arms for up to 15 minutes at a time.

• Hand flexibility, listening and motor skills.

Are comfortable with loud and sometime sharp noises.

 

How long does a playshop go for?

2 to 2.5 hours with one or two breaks works well.

Playshops can be as short as 60 minutes although this requires fast learning from the participants and a limited experience.

We can also deliver half and full day playshops if you want the group to experience greater connection through drumming.

 

How many can be in a playshop?

Playshops work best when there are between 10 to  20 participants, although we can run session for between 6 and 45 people.

 

What are the venue requirements for a Drumming Playshop?

We priorities having a physical and emotionally safe learning space for our participants. 

Like learning many new skills, playing the drum for first time can raise feelings of self-doubt and vulnerability.

It works well if everyone is in it together, so if you're in the room/space you're playing a drum.


Rhythmication
Yes! We made this word up  😉

 It's about the the process of using rhythm to facilitate connection and communication. Participants will engage in fun and playful activities to explore particular topics or learn new skills.

We design the session to suit your goals. For example building connections, community consultation, planning and problem solving. 

We are trained in the Rhythm2Recovery method and we use these and other fun activites in our sessions.

Activities will include very basic drumming techniques and rhythms so people can easily join in.

Play, learning topics, discussion, experimentation, improvisation and movement.

Interactive sharing of knowledge, ideas, beliefs and feelings.

Rhythmication is suitable for participants who:

Arrive at the dedicated start time and stay for the entire session.

Our specialty is facilitating sessions for adults and we have experience in including people with disability.

We can co-facilitate sessions for young people. Sessions can be designed to meet the particular needs of the group.

 

How long does a Rhythmication session go for?

The length of the session depends on the purpose. The learning or connection outcomes may be spread over a series of session or condensed into one or two half or full day session. 

The time frame depends or the purpose.

1 x 3 hours session

2 x half day sessions

        • Further connections and getting to know each other better.

Rhythmication sessions work best when there are between 6 to 12 participants.

Pop Up Drum Installations


Pop Up Drum Installation are also great for public events. We install the drums on stands and we set up the amplified music. Community members pop by and experiment with joining in the rhythm their own way.

What will we experience at a Pop Up Drum Installation?

Participants will experience the fun and experimentation of playing a drum to amplified music.

Drums can be set up in a circle or in small groups.

 

Who can play in the Pop Up Drum Installation?

Any age and skill level.

 

How long does a Pop Up Drum Installation go for?

Drums can be installed for the term of an event. 

2 hours or across a number of days.  Drumming is not facilitated, the public can simply walk up and play on a drum. 

We will be onsite to monitor the drums and sound gear.

 

How many drums in a Pop Up Drum Installation?

20 drums on stands

 

What are the venue requirements for a Pop Up Drum Installation?

A place where people are already gathering or walking past.

Ability to make loud noise without disturbing others. 

Power to plug in PA system to play music for people to drum along with. Protected from sun, rain, strong wind.

We love to share the rhythm in drumming playshops and community rhythm circles. 

Mackay based artists Karen Bonham & Jennifer Emmett have been playing music together since 2005 and enjoy a variety of music styles.

Karen is an accomplished singer, songwriter, guitarist and piano player with over 30 years experience as a performance artists and Jennifer has been playing the djembe drum since 2000.
